How the timings are calculated

Every prayer time is a position of the sun. Fajr begins when the sun is a set angle below the eastern horizon (dawn), Dhuhr when the sun has crossed the meridian (solar noon), Asr when an object's shadow has grown by its own length (or twice its length in the Hanafi school) beyond the shadow at noon, Maghrib at sunset, and Isha when the sun is a set angle below the western horizon (dusk). The calculator works out the sun's declination and the equation of time for the date from the US Naval Observatory's published formulas, then solves the hour angle at which the sun reaches each of those altitudes for your latitude and longitude, and converts to Indian Standard Time (UTC+5:30). Sunrise and sunset use the standard 0.833° below the horizon, which allows for refraction and the sun's radius.

The angles, and why timetables differ

The Quran and hadith describe dawn and dusk; the angle that corresponds to them is a matter of observation and scholarship, and different bodies settled on different figures. The University of Islamic Sciences in Karachi uses 18° for both Fajr and Isha and is what most timetables in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh follow. The Muslim World League uses 18° and 17°; Egypt's authority 19.5° and 17.5°; ISNA in North America 15° and 15°, which gives a later Fajr and an earlier Isha; Umm al-Qura in Makkah uses 18.5° for Fajr and fixes Isha at ninety minutes after Maghrib. The difference between methods is a few minutes at Indian latitudes for Fajr and Isha, and nothing for the other three, which depend only on the sun's geometry.

Asr is the other point of difference. In the Hanafi school Asr begins when the shadow is twice the object's length beyond its noon shadow; in the other three schools, once its length. Hanafi Asr is later by forty minutes to an hour. Most masjids in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and Lucknow follow Hanafi timings; many in Kerala and coastal Karnataka follow the Shafi school. Worked example

Hyderabad on 17 September 2026 (17.36° N, 78.47° E). The sun's declination that day is about +2.2° and the equation of time about +5 minutes, so solar noon falls at 12:11 IST and Dhuhr with it. With the Karachi angles the page gives Fajr 4:52 am, sunrise 6:04 am, Dhuhr 12:11 pm, Asr 4:34 pm (Hanafi) or 3:33 pm (standard), Maghrib 6:17 pm and Isha 7:29 pm. Checked the same day against an independent astronomical table for Hyderabad: sunrise 6:04, sunset 6:16, solar noon 12:10, and astronomical twilight (the 18° points) 4:52 and 7:28. The one-minute differences come from the exact coordinates used for the city centre and from rounding. Compare with your masjid's board; a difference of one to three minutes is the timetable's own rounding and safety margins, which many add deliberately.

Limits

At high latitudes in midsummer the sun never reaches 18° below the horizon, and Fajr or Isha have no astronomical time; that does not happen anywhere in India, so the page does not handle it and says so if you enter such a place. Times are rounded to the nearest minute. Eid, Ramadan and other dates depend on moon sighting and are not calculated here.
